Un ex-poliziotto quarantenne va a Teheran per incontrare il regista Makmalbaf e recitare nel suo ultimo film. Venti anni prima il regista aveva ferito il poliziotto con una coltellata, nel tentativo di disarmarlo per prendergli la pistola. Il cineasta, che lottava contro il regime dello Shah, fu arrestato e trascorse alcuni anni in prigione. Così, oggi, egli propone all'uomo di ricostruire cinematograficamente l'episodio: ognuno di loro sceglierà un ragazzo per interpretare i loro ruoli.
